Since July 2021, I have created over 180 distinct, site-specific red fibre art installations across Canada as a national intervention to initiate dialogue on decolonization and reconciliation. This grant is for a new body of work: weavings created by repurposing these previously used, site-specific materials on copper forms I construct. This new phase is the 'healing' portion of the project.

The installations were strategically placed in historically charged locations—including former residential school sites and cultural institutions—to interrupt dominant colonial narratives. My art prompts viewers to question whose stories are told and who holds the power to broadcast them. My identity as both a settler and an Indigenous person informs this work.

The materials are red fibre, chosen for its complex symbolism. Red represents the violence and loss endured by Indigenous peoples, but also passion, resistance, courage, and resilience—mirroring the complex journey toward authentic reconciliation.

The fibres have been exposed to the elements for four years, resulting in a profound, alchemical transformation. UV radiation has bleached the outer layers, creating a soft patina, while the inner core retains its original vibrancy. I de-install, unravel, and cleanse the fibres. This resulting chromatic complexity, a visual dialogue between time and resilience, will be directly woven into the new artworks, embedding the history of each installation site into the new fabric.

Each weaving is one of a kind and comes in a float frame.
